TURNFORD OPEN NETBALL TOURNAMENT 12 JUNE 2010

Having won every Turnford Junior Open Tournament from their debut at Under 9's, the U16's were in no mood to surrender their proud record at their final appearance, before moving onto senior netball, even if the official second and third placed teams from the All England National competition were in attendance.

With the early game debacle from the Nationals Finals still fresh in the memory, facing Oaksway, who finished third, in the very first match of the day, was always going to be a testamentof the girl's character.

However, despite playing well below their usual high standards the U16's had too much class for their opposition and always comfortably holding the advantage won 8-6.

From here on it was business as usal as win after win rolled off the conveyer belt with Asco 11-3, Chiltern Flames 10-2 and Star, 14-2 all being dispatched in emphatic fashion.

Next up were great rivals Tameside from the Northwest, who were runners up at the Nationals.  Over the years these two very talented sides have usally contested the final at all the major events and produced some high octane enounters.  This meeting of the two sides was no exception and again, with no quarter asked and non given the action fast, furious and of the highest standard. In a very tight match the lead seesawed with centre and with the umpires raising their whistles to end the encounter Tameside's goal attack netted to level the scores at 9-9 and thus ending a four game losing steak against the All Blacks.  This was probably a fitting result in the last every match between the two teams before they both move up to senior netball.

The two teams would therefore predictably finish the competition on level points.  However, on thing Turnford have been good at and that is racking up the goals and they continued in imperious fashion beating Westoning 14-0, Hatfield 12-1 and Cheshunt 15-2.  This gave them an impressive 16 goal advantage and keep their pround record in the tournament intact.

Next up is the prestigious Pontins Tournament at Weston-Super-Mare where the squad of Olivia Bugg, Charlotte Campbell, Amy Dean, Sian Green, Jasmine Hatherley, Hannah Lok, Bobbi Simmonds, Sophie Stainton are looking forward to taking on new U16's National Champions Parkside.
TURNFORD U16's v STAR U16's

Despite a very stern test of their mettle, Turnford were able to enjoy their trek home from Star on Sunday.

In a superb contest of power, strength and skill Turnford's Essex neighbours fought tooth and nail but were unable to 'klingon' to their lead as the superior class of the All Blacks won the day.

In an absolute pulsating game where the action was fast and furious and the atmosphere electric with a vociferous home crowd baying for victory, the Turnford girls held their nerve and toughed out a very thorough examination of their ability and determination.

This was not a game of ebb and flow, more a torrent against torrent, with neither side willing to give an inch.  The first quarter set the tone for the whole game with play being conducted at break neck spped.  Within the first few minutes Turnford were in the unusual position of being 3-0 behind.  However, regrouping after the initial onslaught they roared back to lead 8-3 before Star stormed back pegging the visitors to 10-10 at the quarter interval.

The second quarter saw the play getting even faster and more furious and the cacophony of noise echoing around the court only added to the drama and excitement.  Neither side was able to establish a comfortable position with the lead changing hands by the minute before Turnford were able to eke a meagre five goal advantage to lead at half time 25-20.

Star were however in no mood to give in without a fight and in a rip roaring third quarter battled every inch of the court and the full 15 minutes to reduce the deficit to 3, leaving them trailing 35-32 and set up a nail biting final quarter.

This Turnford team have not been so successful for no reason and their superior skill and fitness started to show through and they began to take control of the game, stretching their lead to see them win the match 48-40 but still glad to hear the final whistle.  High hopes are expected from this talented squad of Olivia Bugg, Charlotte Campbell, Amy Dean, Beth Ewan, Sian Green, Jazz Hatherly, Hannah Lok, Sally Pyne, Bobbi Simmonds and Sophie Stainton but they need to take lessons from this game if they want to be crowned National Champions 2010, as there are many tougher assignments ahead.

TURNFORD U16's v PETERBOROUGH FLAMES U16's

For the second week running Turnford well and truly put out the fire of their opposition as they trounced Peterborough Flames, the Cambridgeshire Champions made up of the County's academy squad, 79-25 in their second game of the East Region Championship.

The All Blacks started the game in scintillating style blazing their way to a 24-7 first quarter lead, with their power and dynamic play leaving their opposition chasing shadows.

The speed and deft passing between goal attack Jazz Hatherly and goal shooter Amy Dean turned the opposition's defence dizzy not knowing which way to turn, as they racked up the goals with consummate ease.

The second quarter was again one way traffic.  The rock solid defending of keeper Sian Green and goal defence Sophie Stainton restricted the opposition to only six goals.  Wing defence Hannah Lok and wing attack Olivia Bugg were able foils to their defensive and attacking colleagues as the goals rained in and Turnford extended their lead to 41-13 at half time.

The third quarter saw the introduction of Peterborough's Young Maverick player at goal keeper, this however made no difference to Turnford who by now were rampant, scoring goals at will.  Turnford also introduced a new player in the promising U15 Beth Ewin who came on as wing defence and was not overawed by the occasion putting in a sterling display as Turnford won the quarter 13-7 to lead 54-20.

By the fourth quarter, with the game won, the girls were really enjoying themselves, displaying skills that the Harlem Globetrotters would have been proud of.  Subline passing between the 'three musketeers' of Jazz Hatherly, Bobbi Simmonds and Charlotte Campbell left the opposition bewildered and enabled ice cool goal shooter U15 Sally Pyne to score goal after goal as Turnford cruised to another easy victory.

The all round skill and versatility of this talented group of girls was ably demonstrated by player of the match Bobbi Simmonds who started the game off at wing attack, moved to goal keeper and ended up as centre.

EAST REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS

Turnford U16's v Chiltern Flames
In the first round of this competition to decide who will have the honour of representing the East Region at the All England National Finals in April, Chiltern Flames were well and truly doused by a rampant Turnford side that was in no mood to extend any late festive goodwill to the Bedfordshire Champions.

Despite not having played for 5 weeks due to the Christmas Festivities and bad weather, Turnford started the new year and decade in scintillating form racing to a 23-3 first quarter lead with centre Charlotte Campbell running the game through the centre court and linking brilliantly with goad attack Jasmine Hatherly who, along with her shooting partner Amy Dean, were in scorching form and scoring goals for fun.

The second quarter was a little disappointing as Turnford eased back and lost their composure allowing the oppostion to get back into the game, despite some excellent play from Olivia Bugg.  Although only winning the quater by two goals, they still went into the half time break with a healthy 36-15 lead.

A stiff half time talk from coach Carole Titmuss had the desired effect and normal service was resumed in the third quarter with superb play with wing attack Bobbi Simmonds and wing defence Hannah Lok, breaking up Flames attacks time after time and with the scoreboard ticking over with metronomic regularity they raced to a third quarter lead of 59-19.

The fourth quarter continued in the same vein and with the unsung defensive heroes of Sian Green and Sophie Stainton in outstanding form, as they had been all game, restricting the visitors, who boasted three Junior Maverick Players, to only three goals in the quarter, the All Blacks cruised to a 76-22 win.

Turnford have always had a good record in the National Netball Club Competition and this year's U16s added to the Club's enviable record in respresenting the county in the premier club competition and also became the third team from the club to represent the East Herts Region in the regional round of the competition, out of the four years it has been run in its new format.  They will now have to face the champions of Beds, Cambs, Essex East, Essex Thurrock, Norfolk and Suffolk with the honour of the victors representing the East Region in the finals of the National Competition.

Having lost only a handful of games over the last 6-7 years this very talented squad, who are probably one of the best squads to have emerged from the county's eminent club, were not expecting too much resistance from the local clubs and so it proved as the Under 14 National winners of 2008 had little problem in putting Hertford, Shelley and Hatfield to the sword as they won the group without really getting out of second gear, despite spirited resistance from their opposition.

They now face Norfolk United on the 10th January 2010 in the first round of their quest to retain their National Champions Status.  The finals are in April and we wish Olivier Bugg, Charlotte Campbell, Amy Dean, Sian Green, Jazz Hatherly, Hannah Lok, Bobbi Simmonds, Sophie Stainton, of the All Blacks Squad all the best for the rest of the tournament.

Stanborough League
This was the first U16 league match of the season.  Played at Stanborough against Hertford Hornets.

The squad consisted of Jasmine Hatherly, Amy Dean, Olivia Bugg, Bobbi Simmonds, Charlotte Campbell, Hannah Lok, Sophie Stainton, Siad Green , Zoe O'Neill, Beth Ewin, Jo Gambino and Sally Payne.

The sun shone bright in East Grinstead - June 2009

Turnford took three squads to the East Grinstead Tournament in the U12's, U13's and U15's sections.

In the U15 section this special squad have done what comes naturally to them. With superb movement, tight marking and defending skills, accurate feeding and spot on shooting  they took to task and beat , Eagles 19:2, Southdown 22:1, Panthers 17:2, Norfolk United 18:3 Wokingham 14:2 CD  Phoenix 16:2 ,  putting them through to the semi finals where they met NRG, sailing through to the finals by beating them  19:2, Here  they met local rivals Crosskeys, but they proved no competition for this unique squad where they lifted the cup 16:6.

TURNFORD OPEN NETBALL TOUNAMENT U15's - JUNE 2009

They say the sun shines on the righteous, well there must have been some very well behaved girls at Turnford on Saturday as the sun shone bright and hot all day and the netball produced by Turnford’s U15’s was at times absolutely divine as they added another cup to their already overflowing trophy cabinet.

The anticipated battle in the opening game with local rivals Crosskeys was just what they needed to get their minds in focus and bodies in shape for the rest of the day.  In a very much one sided match, which these games are now becoming, the girls ignored the physical intimidation and cruised to a comfortable 14-5 win with centre Charlotte Campbell having an outstanding game in the centre court and goal shooter Amy Dean popping in the goals one after the other.

Next up were Chiltern Flames, who put up a spirited effort in the first half restricting Turnford to only a 4-1 lead at the turn around. The second half was however completely one way traffic with Bobbi Simmonds outstanding and new girl Olivia Bugg slotting in well the girl’s pace and style of play as they ran out comfortable 13-1 winners.

Hertford Heath were next up and were dispatched with equal  aplomb 12-3, with wing attack Faye Hoppit supplying  excellent balls into the circle for goal attack Jazz Hatherly to slot the goals in with ease.

The derby match with Herford Hornets was again a one side affair despite a spirited display from the opposition with wing defence Hannah Lok intercepting time after time.

Now only Brookside Maestro stood between them and the semi finals and the girls were no mood to fall short at the last hurdle and despite the toughest game of the qualifying rounds ran out 11-4 winners, with goal defence Sophie Stainton producing an excellent performance to keep the opposition’s score to a modest level

The semi finals was against  Maulden Jaguars who despite having the temerity of taking an early 2-0 lead, the first time Turnford had been behind all day, were soon put in their place as  the All Blacks raised the tempo of their game and cruised to a 13-2 win and a second successive final meeting with Northwest rivals Tameside.

Facing much better opposition than they had faced all day a tough game was anticipated but as often the case, the stronger the opposition the better the girls play and this final was no different. Turnford went behind for only the second time of the day giving the opposition an early 2-0 advantage. Having never lost their home tournament the girls were in no mood to loose that record and  roared back to a 5-2 half time lead. The second half continued very much in the same vein as the first half had ended as Turnford ran out convincing 10-3 win with some outstanding defence from keeper Sian Green.

In view of the all round excellent play from every single player the player of the tournament to went to the whole squad.

Next up for the squad is the very competitive two day tournament by the sea at Pontins in the first week of July but they go into it in very good shape.

CHELMSFORD TOURNAMENT U15’s - JUNE 2009

On a hot sunny day at Chelmsford on Sunday, Turnford U15’s continued their long winning streak by wining all their games in emphatic fashion to add another tournament win to their impressive list of successes.

First up were New Campbell and Brookside Maestros who were dispatched will little fuss 10-1 and 8-1 respectively with excellent feeding into the circle by Faye Hoppit and superb interceptions by wing defence Hannah Lok.

Next were Mid Sussex who offered no real opposition being crushed 18-3 with under14’s Zoe O’Neil playing well at wing defence and did not look out of place in this talented team and the experience will stand her in good stead for the future.

Player of the tournament Bobbi Simmonds was superb producing outstanding play in the multitude of positions she was asked to play as Turnford simply outclassed Braintree 16-1, Jade Diamonds 12-0, Galaxy Crystals 15-0 and Poole 11-1 with goal attack Jazz Hatherly producing her normal athletic display of dynamic netball.

Conquerors put up reasonable spirited opposition but succumbed 12-5

Old adversaries from the Northwest Tameside provided sterner opposition but were put away with equal aplomb 9-4 with terrific defence from Sophie Stainton and sharp accurate shooting from Amy Dean giving them a 2-0 lead over them this year.

With only local rivals Crosskeys between them and tournament victory the girls were in no mood to let it slip now and so it proved. In the knowledge that it would be a hard physical encounter, as the matches usually are, the girls stood firm to the challenge and let their netball do the talking. Centre Charlotte Campbell rose above the intimidation and ran the game from defence to attack as the All Black win machine comfortably won the game 11-4 and thus the tournament, scoring an impressive 122 goals and only conceding 20

CLAN TOURNAMENT U15's - MAY 2009

On a glorious sunny Sunday at High Wycombe, Turnford U15’s, with the help of a two of the U16’s, won yet another tournament in Clan’s U16’s competition.

Starting with an all U15’s line up, the first game saw Turnford at sixes and seven against a spirited Dominoes side and at half time with the teams being level and no composure they were in danger of losing the game which would have seriously dented their hopes of winning the tournament. However, the second half tactical substitution of bringing on U16’s shooter Emily Campbell and wing defence Francesca Jaffa added stability and wise heads to the team and Emily’s scintillating shooting and Frankie’s superb intercepting and calmness steadied the ship and Turnford  ran out 11-6 winners. The platform for winning the tournament was thus set.

The second game saw Turnford run out comfortable winners over Apollo 20-3 with player of the tournament goalkeeper Sian Green and fellow defender Sophie Stainton locking up the defence and giving away goals as regular as getting a  loan from the banks.

Woodley went the same way, comfortably beaten 15-5 with goal attack Jazz Hatherly in superb form, as one would expect from this junior England player. Hannah Lok was outstanding in defence, breaking down the oppositions’ attacks time after time.

Phoenix proved to be a sterner challenge however with Bobbi Simmonds a colossus in the centre court, turning defence into attack time after time and feeding the shooters superbly, they were dispatched 14-9.

Old adversaries Essex were all that stood between Turnford and the semi finals but despite a hard fought tussle Turnford ran out 15-8 winners. Centre Charlotte Campbell stood firm and dominated the centre court and ably supported both attack and defence and covered every inch of the tarmac.

The semi final was a non event with Turnford wining a comfortable affair 15-2 win over hosts Clan.

The final with previous victims Phoenix was a much closer than the earlier encounter but Turnford won 12-9 with good shooting from Amy Dean.

Top Spot January 2008

Turnford's U15 side entered the Herts Premier League for the first time, entering into Division 3.
At the half way mark they are sitting at top position with two senior teams, Westminster Ladies and Hatfield Seniors. They also entered into the Turnford-Mercury Mid Week Senior League, for the first time, entering straight into Division 2, and at the half way mark they remain unbeaten with a massive  goal difference of 261 to 79 between themselves and second placed Cheshunt.
They look in line to join Turnford 1, 2, 3 & 4 in the First Division - an amazing achievement for a Club to have 5 teams in the First Division.

ASCO September 2008
Turnford U15's have now made it two tournament wins out of two for the 2008/2009 season winning at ASCO over the weekend. In a truncated event, due to teams dropping out, they could do no more than beat the opposition put in front of them, which they did so in emphatic style. First up were Essex Open who could not cope with the pace and power of these young ladies who ran out 15-2 winners. Crosskeys went the same way losing 12-6 along with Asco14-0 and Poole 13-2 to complete a comfortable win on a pleasant sunny autumnal day. Credit went to all the all the squad for their, once again, superb play.

Nottingham September 2008
Turnford Netball's band of merry ladies made their annual weekend pilgrimage to the home of Robin Hood for the prestigious Nottingham Open Tournament and struck gold in two of the five events they entered.

The under 15s cruised through the preliminary rounds which decided the shield and plate competitions. They started their day with a workmanlike 6-3 win over Oldham and thereafter the victories rolled off one after the other, Blackpool 10-3, Yendys 7-2, local rivals Crosskeys Youth 11-5 and Hartlepool Oaksway 15-2.

Having qualified for the premier competition they started the first round of the shield competition with a 7-3 win over Oldham which closed the end of a long and very wet day with Sian Green proving steadfast in defence.  Having been refreshed with a good nights sleep, they met old adversaries Tameside in the first game of the day. The rest clearly had the desired affect as they raced into a 7-1 lead with excellent interceptions from Sarah Chuchla and Charlotte Campbell turning defence into attack time after time, before easing back to record a convincing 7-4 win. After a slight hiccup with 8-6 loss to Darwen they roared back to form with a 15-3 win over YWCA Bury.  Parkside 8-3 and Nottingham 7-3 offered little opposition to these National Champions.  The final game of the day saw a convincing 15-0 rout of Ribble Valley, to wrap up winning the competition with the defence of Sophie Stainton and Bobbi Simmonds stopping the opposition getting anywhere near to a shooting position, let alone scoring, and the superb accurate shooting of Jasmine Hatherly and Amy Dean enabling them to score more than one goal every thirty seconds in the second half.  New girl Hannah Lok was named player of the tournament as a result of her consistent all round good play and athleticism over the two days.

Nationals Champions - again
Following on from last year's marvelous achievement of gaining U14 National Championship award, Turnford have done it again.  The squad of 12 along with coach Carole Titmuss assisted by Jayne Bartlett and Sue Watson, travelled to Norwich to compete in the final stages of the U14 Challenge Cup.

Turnford represented the East Region, after winning their place in the play-offs on May 18th.  The competition took place at the indoor courts of Norwich University. Turnford's focus and termination saw them bet off New Cambell from Essex 22:6, Bucks Swans from Buckinghamshire 28:10, Oaksway from Hartlepool 25:6 and completing their round robin section beat Parkside from the Midlands 14:5.

U14's are East Region Champions - May 2008

Turnfords U14 squad entered into the East Region Netball Championships held last Sunday at Stanborough School Welwyn Garden City,  with many teams from round the region,  Cambridge, Bedfordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Hertfordshire competing.

The games were divided into two sections.  Turnford's first game was against local team Hatfield, but this match did not prove of difficulty to the Turnford side as they ran out winners 21:3. The next game was against Essex side Brookshaw Stuart, but again this young talented side ran out winners 20:2. The next match Turnford took on cautiously, as in the past Robins from Essex have always been a close match, but again with the excellent shooting of Jasmine Hatherly and Amy Dean and tight defending of Bobbi Simmonds and Sophie Stainton, helping  Turnford run out winners 12:4.  Manor from Essex was the next challenge, but court play of Charlotte Campbell and Sarah Chuchla proved too much for Manor side and again Turnford ran out winners 22:1.

During the next match against Westoning Flames from Suffolk and despite the handicap of Turnford being one man down due to the injury of the goal attack, Turnford ran out winners 6:3.  This put them through to the semi finals against Mauldon from Essex, again this very talented side showed no mercy and ran out winners 19:5.

The finals were against Westoning Flames who they had met and beat during the rounds and where Turnford played half the game with six players, but with a complete squad Turnford lifted the cup winning 18:4.

Turnford will now represent the East Region at the National Champions held on the 7th June in Norfolk

Coach Carole Titmuss states how very proud of the squad of 12 talented players she was and how delighted she was that all of them got court time proving that this was very much a team effort.
